Joaquin Buckley on ‘surreal’ header KO at UFC Fight Island 5: “I call it Wakanda style”

Joaquin Buckley is a shoo-in for a performance bonus, but he also may have won the “Knockout of the Year” in 2020 at UFC Fight Island 5.

After opponent Impa Kasanganay caught a kick, Buckley landed a jumping kick right in the face of his opponent and hit him stiff during the preliminary map of the event in Abu Dhabi.

UFC President Dana White has already taken to social media to award Buckley one of the night’s $ 50,000 bonuses, which would certainly compliment his first promotional victory very well.

“It’s still surreal right now,” Buckley told reporters backstage.

“At the end of the day, a lot of people don’t know anything about fights, and they only follow the person who has the most followers,” he added. “I’d rather stay under the radar and do what I’m doing.”

Buckley told Dan Hardy after the win that the kick was a move he worked on in the gym a bit. When asked behind the scenes if this was part of the overall game plan for the 185-pound contest, he said he knew there was a potential opening for it.

“I was aware of it because he grabbed my foot the first time around,” Buckley said. “I hesitated to throw it at that point, but the second time was, why not? When I threw him I logged in, I just didn’t know I knocked him out until I saw his body stiffen up and I was like, ‘Oh, yeah. It’s the end of the game. ”

While terms like “ninja style” have been brought up for the incredible finish that will be on the best moments for years to come, Buckley is more geared towards the Black Panther superhero.

“I call it the Wakanda style,” Buckley said.
