NEW DELHI – India crossed 100,000 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 on Saturday, placing the country’s toll at nearly 10% of global deaths and behind only the United States and Brazil.

This grim milestone comes on the heels of a growing crisis for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist government which has come under fire for handling the virus and doing very little to ease the economic contraction which has left millions of unemployed.
