Chelsea striker says his ‘alleged rivalry’ with compatriot was made from nothing
Giroud has established himself as a key part of France’s attack in his absence and is set to win his 100th cap in a friendly against Ukraine on Wednesday.
Since his retirement, Benzema has strongly criticized the presence of Giroud in front of the Blues. When asked to rate the Chelsea forward on social media last April, Benzema said: “You don’t confuse F1 with karting… and I know I’m F1. ”
But Giroud insists he has no problem with the former Lyon star, whom he regrets having been relegated to international nature for so long.
“Obviously, it’s a shame, because Karim remains an impressive player for his qualities,” said Giroud. RMC Sport.
“Me, I never had an argument with him, history wanted us to be opposed. I always had a good understanding with him, a lot of mutual respect… at least from me towards him.
“I think it’s a shame everything that happened, it’s kind of a mess, but now we have to move on. The English envy us a lot for this growing young generation. ”
Giroud was part of the France team that won the World Cup in 2018 and believes he has proven he deserves his place in the team, with an “alleged rivalry” with Benzema fabricated in the media.
“At the time, when I was unfairly criticized for not having Karim, it hurt me,” said Giroud, who has only made one Premier League appearance for Chelsea so far. ‘now this season.
“I continued to prove that I deserved my place and that this supposed rivalry with Karim had been created from scratch by some people.
“I have nothing to do with it, we just play at the same position. It happened but I reacted well to these difficulties. “
