Ms Hicks has been with Mr Trump for years

US President Donald Trump has said he and the US first lady are in quarantine after one of his closest associates tested positive for coronavirus.

He tweeted that he and Melania Trump were now awaiting their own test results after Hope Hicks was infected.

The 31-year-old adviser to the president is Mr. Trump’s closest aide to a positive test so far.

She traveled with him on Air Force One to a televised debate in Ohio earlier this week.

Ms Hicks was pictured stepping off the presidential jet Tuesday in Cleveland without a mask.

She was even closer to him aboard the presidential Marine One helicopter on Wednesday when the president called a rally in Minnesota.

Hope Hicks initially served as White House communications director in 2017-18

M. Trump tweeted Thursday evening: “Hope Hicks, who worked so hard without even taking a little break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible!

“The First Lady and I are awaiting the results of our tests. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process! ”

It’s unclear how the quarantine will affect the arrangements for the second presidential debate, which is scheduled for October 15 in Miami, Florida.

In a phone call with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Thursday night, Mr. Trump said he and Ms. Trump “spend a lot of time with Hope.”

“So we’ll see what happens,” the president said, adding that Ms Hicks often wore masks but always tested positive.

The disease has infected more than 7.2 million Americans, killing more than 200,000 of them.

The White House tests assistants and anyone else who comes into daily contact with the president.

Mr. Trump primarily rejects the wearing of masks and is often portrayed without social distancing with his assistants or others during official engagements.

According to Bloomberg News, Ms Hicks is showing symptoms of the disease and was quarantined on Air Force One on the return trip from Minnesota.

Ms Hicks is the latest White House assistant to contract Covid-19. Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary Katie Miller tested positive in May and has recovered.

That same month, a member of the United States Navy who was one of Mr. Trump’s personal valets tested positive for the coronavirus.

But the White House said neither the president nor the vice president were affected.

National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien, a number of Secret Service agents, a Marine One pilot and a White House cafeteria worker have also tested positive.

Ms Hicks was the campaign spokesperson during Mr Trump’s candidacy before becoming director of communications for her White House.

She resigned in March 2018 to become head of communications at Rupert Murdoch’s Fox, before returning to the White House in February.
