“He’s one of the leaders” – Deschamps praises Pogba after France’s victory in Croatia

The Manchester United midfielder has been praised by his national team manager after taking victory in Zagreb in a 2018 World Cup final

French coach Didier Deschamps hailed “leader” Paul Pogba after a 2-1 Nations League victory over Croatia on Wednesday.Pogba came off the bench in Zagreb and his long assist led Lucas Digne to prepare for the winner from Kylian Mbappe in the 79th minute.

Antoine Griezmann’s opener in the eighth minute had already been called off by Nikola Vlasic, but France made sure to move up to 10 points, tied with Portugal in Group A3.

Deschamps praised Manchester United midfielder Pogba, especially for the pass that led to Mbappe’s goal.

“About Pogba, one could of course say that he is indisputable, but the same could be said of Antoine Griezmann,” Deschamps said at a press conference.

“He’s one of the leaders, he has this ability to be decisive and also to be a leader in the group. He didn’t start because it was wiser for him not to start, with the problem he was having, but yes, he’s one of the most important players on the team.

“Even though, sometimes it might be tough times, but he has that strength to come together.

“Also, he has this quality in pre-assistance. I don’t take anything away from the quality of Lucas Digne’s cross, but he has that technical quality, not necessarily by dribbling like he did before, but this pass is the one that starts everything. ”

Deschamps’ leadership was also praised, with Griezmann thanking his coach for playing him as a center forward, rather than on the right where he has often been deployed for Barcelona.

“The coach knows where to put me,” Griezmann said of Deschamps in an interview with TF1. “I take advantage of this situation, this place, the confidence of the coach and my teammates.

“It was a complicated game, not very good to see, not very good to play, on difficult ground. We knew how to suffer, the most important thing is to win and to show that we are strong. ”

France will face Finland in a friendly match next month before ending their Group A3 campaign against Portugal and Sweden. The group winner qualifies for the final four-team tournament, scheduled for next year.
