On election night, the Guardian offers readers a unique way to get live, up-to-the-minute election results on their mobile phones.

What is that?

When the results start arriving on Tuesday night, we’ll send out a mobile alert that will automatically update with the latest nationwide vote count data overnight. Without a tap, search, or opening an app, you can follow the vote counts and key developments live on your phone’s lock screen. (This is your phone’s screen when you’re not actively using it.)

This alert will be one of the fastest ways to receive election results on Tuesday and beyond. Since we don’t know how long it will take to count the votes this year – whether hours, days or weeks – the election alert will continue to count until the election is officially called, even though you can minimize it at any time.

How do I register?

The alert is available free worldwide on iOS and Android devices to anyone who downloads the Guardian mobile app.

If you are in the USA: If you already own the app and have subscribed to the last minute notifications in the US, you don’t need to do anything – you will automatically receive the live election alert. But if you need to download the app or if you haven’t already signed up to receive notifications, you can follow these steps:

  • You can download the Guardian app from the iOS App Store on iPhone or the Google Play Store on Android phones by searching for “The Guardian”
  • If you already have the Guardian app, make sure you are using the most recent version

  • In the Guardian app, go to Settings> Notifications

  • Enable ‘US Election 2020’ notifications

If you are outside the United States:

  • Download the Guardian app from the iOS App Store on iPhone or the Google Play Store on Android phones by searching for “The Guardian”

  • If you already have the Guardian app, make sure you are using the most recent version

  • In the Guardian app, go to Settings> Notifications

  • Enable ‘US Election 2020’ notifications

What will I receive?

If you register, you’ll receive a single Continuous Update notification that will appear on your phone’s lock screen when the results arrive on election night. The notification will show the most recent numbers of electoral votes won and states called, as well as an indication of which transitional states were called and the distribution of the popular vote between the two main candidates.

You’ll also be able to expand the alert to see a data visualization showing the election vote and options to access the Guardian live blog or a full results page.

What if I decide to stop receiving alerts?

No problem. When the notification is expanded (drag down to expand notifications on Android, and slide your finger sideways to press “View” or press firmly to expand on iOS), buttons will be associated with the notification, including Included an option to turn off (on iOS) or Stop (on Android) the notification. Tap on it and you will be unsubscribed.

Who created the alert?

The project was developed in 2016 by the Guardian’s Mobile Innovation Lab, which was funded by the John S and James L Knight Foundation to explore the dissemination of information on small screens. Version 2020 was developed by the Guardian Apps team, which is part of our product and engineering division. It is fed live by data from The Associated Press, which has played a key role in evaluating the results of American elections since 1848.
