UNCASVILLE, Connecticut – Gegard Mousasi came out of the cage of the Bellator 250 on Thursday, two-time Bellator middleweight champion.Mousasi (47-7-2 MMA, 5-1 BMMA) dominated, attacked and worked his way to a unanimous decision victory over welterweight champion Bellator Douglas Lima (32-8 MMA, 14-4 BMMA ) by scores of 48-47, 49-46 and 49-46.

The fight for the vacant middleweight title was the main event for the Bellator 250 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. It aired on CBS Sports Network and aired on DAZN after foreplay on MMA Junkie.

Originally slated to take place in May 2019, the fight has been postponed for five months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the first round, Mousasi used his muscles to train Lima on the mat. From there he managed to get a hook in Lima’s back. Mousasi hit Lima with infrequent but harsh punches to the head.

The second round was more of a standing battle than the first. Mousasi stalked Lima for much of the tour. While Lima had some success with his counter strike, he found himself pushed against the fence again late in the round.

Lima’s kicks came to life in round three and generated the most successful attack he has had in the fight so far. Mousasi, however, continued to bring Lima down. Mousasi’s jab pumped all fights, but particularly in the third round.

In the fourth round, both fighters had their moments. Mousasi’s boxing suits found the mark but Lima’s counter strike was still effective. The two fighters traded brutal kicks, fighting for a generally even round.

In the final round, Mousasi and Lima went back and forth on their feet. With 90 seconds left in the round, Mousasi finally got the clean out he was looking for. Although he held Lima for the remainder of the fight, he was unable to generate a significant offense with him.

With the victory over Lima, Mousasi became the Bellator middleweight champion for the second time. Mousasi has won nine of his last 10 fights dating back to February 2016. His only loss came via a majority decision against Rafael Lovato Jr. at the Bellator 200 in June 2019. The loss broke Mousasi’s eight-game winning streak.

After Lovato’s decisive performance over Mousasi, the then middleweight champion was diagnosed with a brain disease which prompted him to retire. Therefore, the belt was released before the main event of the Bellator 250.

In the loss, Lima’s three-game winning streak is broken. Since 2012, Lima has lost only three times.
