Frank Lampard doesn’t expect to have to call on Petr Cech this season with the retired keeper only in the Premier League side Chelsea in an emergency, while insisting he is in excellent shape fit and ready to contribute.

The 38-year-old’s name was a shock addition to Chelsea’s squad roster, which was announced on Tuesday, with the Czech having been spotted in training several times throughout the summer and this season.

Chelsea have confirmed that their presence in the team was only an “emergency blanket” and a “precautionary measure due to the unprecedented conditions currently being caused by the Covid-19 crisis”.

In addition to Cech, Chelsea still have three senior goalies on their books: summer signing Edouard Mendy, world’s most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and veteran Willy Caballero.

The Senegalese striker was between the sticks for Tuesday’s draw with Sevilla, overcoming his injury, and Lampard says it can only benefit Chelsea’s goalkeepers to be around Cech even if he never sees the time from the pitch .

Speaking after the game, Lampard said of Cech’s inclusion in the Premier League squad: “Yes, Pete has been training with the goalkeepers for a little while.

“He spends a lot of days with them, which is invaluable for his experience, helps us in training, helps me know that he is passing that quality and experience on to the goalkeepers.

“We had free space in the squad, we know this year is unlike any other because of Covid and what it could do for selection and isolation throughout the year. So it was very easy. Pete always does his job but he’s there if we need him.

When asked what form Cech is in and how likely he is to play, Lampard continued, “As far as Pete’s situation goes, yes, he’s in good shape. He is very fit.

“He’s still relatively young, Pete finished playing maybe when he could have kept playing. He took his role at Chelsea, which he does very well and which is very useful to me and we work very closely together.

But he trains very regularly, he’s in good shape and I don’t know if we’ll see him a lot this season. As I mentioned before, it depends on how the season plays out with Covid and the isolation.

“We felt – or certainly felt – it was obvious to have Pete on the team for that reason.

“And it also helps me that he trains every day, when he’s in such good shape it can only help the goalkeepers we have to see one of the best in the world in recent years.” , in the modern era, among us. ”

He added, “With Pete, it’s something I didn’t expect to happen this year, but I know how good he is and how fit he is, if we were. in times of crisis, of course, you couldn’t ask for anything better than to have Petr Cech around. So I didn’t expect it, but nobody expected what we have seen in the last six or seven months in the world.
