France sees highest number of Covid-19 patients hospitalized since April

Loire regional authorities request army field hospitals for Covid-19

Figures suggest the outbreak could be worse than previously known, while experts have warned that the actual number of people infected in France could be up to twice as high as reported.

“We are in a very difficult, even critical situation,” Jean-François Delfraissy, president of the government’s scientific council, told RTL on Monday. “There are probably over 50,000 cases a day. [We] estimate that there are probably around 100,000 cases per day.

“Between the diagnosed cases, the undiagnosed cases and the asymptomatic cases, we are around this figure. We are dealing with a virus that spreads extremely quickly. ”

Several regions in France have implemented emergency plans in hospitals, delaying non-essential operations to make room in intensive care units for coronavirus patients and canceling staff vacations.

Sources told Reuters authorities were looking for options for even tougher measures to tackle Covid-19, including starting a 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. curfew earlier, confining people to their homes weekends, except for essential travel and non-essential store closures.
