PARIS (Reuters) – France on Friday reported 49,215 new confirmed cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, up from 47,637 on Thursday and a record 52,010 on Sunday.
A new national lockdown went into effect in France on Friday in an effort to curb a COVID-19 epidemic which officials say is at risk of spiraling out of control.
The number of people who have died in France from COVID-19 increased by 256 in 24 hours to 36,565, the health ministry said. The cumulative number of cases now stands at 1,331,984.
New hospitalizations in the past seven days reached 16,258 from 15,786 on Thursday. This includes 2,401 people in intensive care unit against 2,278 Thursday.
President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday evening that France could start easing lockdown measures once COVID infections fell to around 5,000 a day.
