More than a million coronavirus infections have been recorded in France since the start of the pandemic, according to official figures.
French health officials said there had been a total of 1.04 million confirmed cases in the country of 67 million people as of Friday evening.
A record 42,032 new infections were reported on Friday in the past 24 hours.
From Saturday, the nighttime curfew imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus is expected to be extended to two-thirds of the country’s inhabitants.
The curfew would then apply in 54 of the administrative regions or departments of France and on the overseas territory of French Polynesia.
France will have to live with the coronavirus at least until next summer, President Emmanuel Macron said.
“When I listen to the scientists, I see that the projections are at best for next summer,” he said, adding that it was too early to say whether France was heading for further full lockdowns or partial.
To date, more than 34,500 people have died in France from coronavirus infections.
