Do you speak French? If that is the case, Emily in Paris“The titular heroine could use your help.
Netflix comedy, from creator Darren Star (Younger, sex and city), follows Chicago Marketing Manager Emily (played by The last tycoon‘s Lily Collins) as she embarks on a Parisian adventure. After his boss (Private practiceKate Walsh, in too brief a role) becomes pregnant, Emily is instead sent to Paris to work with the French luxury boutique that Emily’s company has acquired. Emily is in awe of its picturesque new surroundings and the changing city life chocolate bread. And she is very excited to share his ideas on how to improve the company’s social media presence, but his new colleagues Luc (Bruno Gouery) and Julien (Samuel Arnold) are not so thrilled to presence. For starters, Emily doesn’t speak French (“Fake it ’til you make it!” Emily retorts), and her courageous approach to work is so American.
Sylvie (Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu), who slips into practically every scene, takes a particular aversion to “the redneck(Aka “the hick”), as Emily’s colleagues call her. “With me as the boss, we’ll see how long it lasts,” Sylvie remarks.
When Luke bumps into Emily in a cafe, he admits that she scares them all, because maybe now they have to work harder. Americans live to work, while the French work to live, he notes. (Example: Emily shows up at the office at 8:30 a.m., unaware that they open their doors at 10:30 a.m.) Emily replies that she enjoys work and accomplishment, which Luke takes to mean that maybe she do not like. You don’t know what it is to be happy. Emily finds it a bit arrogant, but Luc retorts that it is arrogant that she came to Paris, knowing no French. “More ignorant than arrogant,” Emily admits apologetically.
But not everyone Emily meets in Paris likes her: when she takes her neighbor’s apartment for her own, Emily discovers she lives above the handsome Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), and luckily for Emily. , he seems amused by it. For now, however, Emily has a boyfriend in Chicago, whose suggestion of engaging in cybersex leads Emily’s vibrator to suppress the power throughout the neighborhood.
Emily also makes a friend in Mindy (Ashley Park, Broadway’s Bad girls), a Chinese expatriate working in Paris as a nanny. Mindy offers Emily her phone number in case she is feeling lonely and wants to have dinner. What good friend!
