Dr Fauci says he is not ready for national COVID-19 lockdown

Coronavirus infections in the country may be on the rise, but Dr Anthony Fauci has said he is not ready to advocate for a national lockdown.Fauci, in an interview to air on Sunday on “60 Minutes,” said the pandemic would need to get “really, really serious” before he could support such a measure, according to an excerpt from the session released by CBS.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases which is part of President Trump’s coronavirus task force, said the country was “tired of the restrictions.”

“So we want to use public health measures, not to hinder the opening of the economy, but to be a safe gateway to the opening of the economy,” Fauci said. “So instead of having an opposition: open the economy [to] recover jobs or close. No. Put “shut down,” and say, “We are going to use public health measures to help us get safely to where we want to go.”

The United States has passed 8 million cases of coronavirus since the outbreak began last winter.
