Speaking at a press conference on Thursday following the unveiling of France’s final squad, coach Didier Deschamps said the following after deciding to leave Blaise Matuidi out of the proceedings for the second consecutive list after his departure from summer for Inter Miami.

“He went over there. It was a career decision, a life choice. He takes responsibility for it. I can understand at his age (33). We talked about it together, he knows very well that by taking this decision, it is more difficult for him in terms of the workforce in France. I didn’t say categorically no to him, in terms of what he did, of what he might be able to do, knowing that there is competition at the same time. It comes, it grows. Young people, those who are not so young. He remains a top quality player. It’s up to him to adapt to his new situation, different matches. There are others who have gone in this direction. I am thinking of the example of André-Pierre Gignac in Mexico. That won’t stop us from watching it.
