It’s a sordid story of business, jealousy, and murder for pay, and it’s all about strippers.

The Chippendales story is being turned into a film starring Dev Patel as Steve Banerjee, the Indian immigrant who created the exotic male dance troupe in Los Angeles in 1979.

Craig Gillespie, who helmed the acclaimed 2017 black comedy I, Tonya, is set to direct, Deadline.com reported on Tuesday.

New role: The Chippendales story is being turned into a movie with Dev Patel as Steve Banerjee, the Indian immigrant who created the exotic male dance troupe in 1979

It is not yet known where the project will end up with several studios keen to get on board, according to Deadline.

Born in Bombay, Banerjee moved to Southern California where he bought a struggling club in Los Angeles and began featuring female mud wrestles and male exotic dancers.

Her “women only” nights were a huge success and in 1979 the Chippendales were born.

Her business partner Paul Snider was married to pin-up model and actress Dorothy Stratten and she suggested dancers wear collars and cuffs.

Banerjee also teamed up with producer Nick Denoia who recruited the male dancers, did the choreography and produced the shows on tour.

The company started making millions of dollars a year with tours in the United States and Europe in the 1980s.

However, a tragedy also followed.

In 1980, Snider, 29, raped and murdered Stratton, 20, after leaving him for director Peter Bogdanovich, and then committed suicide.

In April 1987, Denoia was shot and killed in his Manhattan office.

Six years later, in 1993, after an undercover FBI injection, Banerjee was arrested and charged with hiring a hitman to kill Denoia.

He pleaded guilty but the day before his conviction, he hanged himself in his prison cell.

With only Patel attached to the film, the search will now be launched to play the roles of Denoia, Snider and Stratten.

Patel is best known for the movie Slumdog Millionaire, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel, Lion, and the HBO series The Newsroom.
