COVID NYC Update: John F. Kennedy Jr. School in Elmhurst First in New York to Close Due to Coronavirus Cases


ELMHURST, Queens (WABC) – A Queens elementary school will be closed for two weeks after two or more students or more staff are exposed to coronavirus in multiple classrooms, becoming the first school in New York City to close due John F. Kennedy Jr. School in Elmhurst will remain closed until Oct. 13, according to a letter sent to families Wednesday.“As always, the health and safety of our students and staff, and all of the DOE family across town, is our top priority,” the letter read. “As you know, our school building was initially closed for 24 hours because at least two members of our school community tested positive for COVID-19. Today we are writing to let you know that the NYC Test + Trace Corps and the New York Department of Health and Mental Hygiene have determined that at this time the main site building is to remain closed for 14 days. ” Related: Day 1 of In-Person Learning for Middle School and High School Students in New York

All teaching and learning will continue remotely and officials hope to reopen the building on Wednesday, October 14.

Anyone with a positive COVID-19 test will not return to school until they are contagious.

Close contacts of those who test positive have been informed and will continue their 14-day quarantine period.

If additional close contacts are identified, they will also be asked to quarantine for 14 days.

Families are reminded to stay home if you feel sick, monitor your and your child’s health, wear a mask, and practice social distancing.

The school, which opened for in-person and blended learning on September 21, has 262 students and 88 staff.
