Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that Liverpool will be placed under ‘level three’ lockdown restrictions from Wednesday as coronavirus cases in the region continue to rise.

Restrictions for the highest level include prohibiting members of more than one household from mingling with each other in any setting indoors as well as in private gardens, and closings of leisure centers, gymnasiums, betting shops and casinos.

The news comes as another 17,234 positive tests were reported and 143 more people have died with Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.

The last time the UK recorded more than 100 deaths in a single day was June 10.

This brings the UK death toll to 43,018 and the total number of cases to 634,920.
