The mayor of Middlesbrough has vowed his city will ‘defy’ stricter coronavirus lockdown rules banning households from mingling indoors from midnight today.

Andy Preston said the new local restrictions, also announced for Liverpool, Warrington and Hartlepool, were based on “factual inaccuracies”, “a monstrous lack of communication” and “ignorance”.

London is also preparing to take more stringent measures as ministers are expected to meet next week to discuss similar measures in the capital, where Covid-19 infections continue to rise.


Poland sees record number of daily cases rise

Poland reported a new record high of 2,292 coronaviruses per day, according to its Ministry of Health’s Twitter account.

The country has also reported 26 other deaths from Covid-19. This brings Poland’s total caseload to 95,773 cases and 2,570 deaths.

London braces for tighter restrictions
