President Emmanuel Macron announced that France would return to a national lockdown on Friday.

Addressing the nation on Wednesday, Mr Macron said France must now “curb brutality” to avoid being “overwhelmed by the accelerating epidemic”.

France reported 523 more coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, the highest number of daily deaths since April.

Meanwhile, more than 1.5 million people in the West Midlands are expected to be in a level three lockdown.

The region is on the verge of transitioning to the most severe restrictions “imminently” as intensive care beds fill up in hospitals amid “sustained and mounting pressures”.

The news comes as the UK yesterday recorded 310 more coronavirus deaths and 24,701 new cases.

It was the second day in a row to see more than 300 dead.

The total death toll now stands at 45,675 and official cases at 942,275.
