Coronavirus Case Reported at Manitoba Youth Correctional Center

WINNIPEG – A case of COVID-19 was reported at a Manitoba youth correctional center on Friday, adding to a growing number of cases in correctional centers across the province. Manitoba health officials reported on Friday that an inmate at the Agassiz Youth Center in Portage la Prairie tested positive for COVID-19. This is the first and only case reported to the center to date.

Another case was also reported in a staff member at Headingley Correctional Center on Friday, bringing the total number of cases in the center to 33.

The center, which is below the critical or red level of the pandemic response system, has been dealing with an outbreak since October 13.

The province said that on Friday five people in the center recovered. They did not say whether these recoveries were from staff or detainees.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Milner Ridge remains at two, although the province reported recovery on Friday.

The Brandon Correctional Center, the Manitoba Youth Center and the Winnipeg Remand Center each have one reported case among staff.

No cases have been reported at Stony Mountain Institution, according to the Correctional Service of Canada.

To date, there have been no COVID-related deaths at any Manitoba correctional center or federal facility in the province.
