Edouard Mendy says he studied Petr Cech, following the remarkable return of training of 38 years.
Cech retired in 2019 and works as a technical advisor at Stamford Bridge, but worked with Frank Lampard and was included in their 25-man Premier League squad as emergency cover.
This gave new No.1 Mendy who, like Cech, joined Chelsea from Rennes, a chance to see the standards expected at Stamford Bridge firsthand.
Edouard Mendy didn’t expect to train with Petr Cech when he joined Chelsea
“It’s just an absolute pleasure to work with him every day. Training allows me to watch how he works and analyze his game, ”said Mendy. “It’s a wonderful bonus for me.
Cech will not be part of the squad to face Manchester United on Saturday, despite an injury preventing Kepa Arrizabalaga. Mendy, who is expected to start, is confident Chelsea can do without the veteran this season. “We already have three very good goalkeepers and that should be enough,” he said.
The Senegalese international has passed Kepa and Willy Caballero but insists there is no tension within the squad.
Mendy loves training with Cech and says he studies the veteran stopper every day
“Before my first match, Kepa wished me good luck. He never holds back if he thinks he sees things that I might have missed, just like Willy Caballero does too. It’s great that we have a united team, ”said Mendy.
“There was a unique situation here with the goalkeepers, but it wasn’t something that played a role in my decision to come to Chelsea. “
Meanwhile, Lampard praised Marcus Rashford for transcending football’s tribalism with his national movement to feed hungry children.
Lampard must find a way to stop Rashford on the pitch today but is hopeful that the 22-year-old England striker continues his campaign.
“It was great to see young players with personality and voice talking about things that matter to them,” said Lampard. “I absolutely congratulate him on that. There is now a group of players in the Premier League who are speaking like him. It has been a fantastic thing which is well appreciated.
“He deserves to be recognized for that, because even if you feel like you are fighting for a good cause, there will be a lot of people who are quick to question it or be negative. “
Cech, who acts as Chelsea’s technical advisor, has been registered as emergency cover
Thiago Silva and Christian Pulisic are fit to travel to Manchester as Chelsea seek a balance between the creativity of their 3-3 draw against Southampton last Saturday and the defensive strength displayed in a 0-0 against Sevilla on Tuesday.
“A blank sheet always gives confidence,” Lampard said. But it’s very simplistic to say that everything was wrong because we conceded goals in one game and everything is fine because we didn’t in another.
“We signed six players looking to compete in the starting XI, so I knew it would take time.
“It’s not perfect to have new players and no time to practice with them. But we will continue to work.
