Celtics’ Vincent Poirier to win Olympic gold with France in NBA ring

France qualified to be one of dozens of teams vying for gold at the Tokyo Olympics.

The late start to next season means some players could miss the Olympics to make the NBA playoffs. It might seem like a no-brainer to many Americans, but Vincent Poirier of France said in an interview with Konbini Sports that it wasn’t easy (hat tip to Eurohoops).

“I take the Olympic title”, declared Poirier… “The Olympic champions of France are rare. If I am one of the 12 players who win gold at the Olympics, I will be a legend.

We don’t yet know what the Olympics will look like next year, although they are slated to start on July 23. We also don’t officially know the start of the next NBA season. Players from teams that miss the NBA Playoffs may have time to participate in the Olympics, but many of the best players in the NBA cannot participate. Nothing is set in stone, but it seems to be heading in that direction.

Players, including Poirier, will pick the club – and a paycheck – over the country, but don’t think that’s taken for granted.
