A scuffle broke out on an Allegiant Air flight to Arizona this week after a man donned a face shield but refused to wear a mandatory face shield underneath, a witness said.
Rylie Lansford was sitting aboard Saturday’s flight from Mesa, Arizona to Provo, Utah, when “all the hell [broke] ample.’
Lansford managed to film part of the fight and uploaded it to her Instagram page, BakedbyRylie, where she garnered more than 20,300 views in one day.
Footage of the incident begins in the midst of a confrontation with a man, dressed in a black t-shirt and a face mask, shouting curses and pulling an older man’s hair.
The older man is said to have worn a face shield, but he is not in the video.
A fight broke out on an Allegiant Air flight on Saturday after an older man (center) allegedly wore a face shield but refused to wear a mandatory face mask underneath.
The masked man hits the older man’s back as aviation security tries to break up the fight.
Video clips end with the two still in a contentious confrontation as the other flight attendants and passengers watch in shock.
“It was absolutely insane to me because it’s all about a mask, and it didn’t have to be,” Lansford told KSL-TV in an interview.
In a separate Instagram video, Lansford explained that the fight broke out after the older passenger donned a face shield but refused to wear a mandatory face mask.
A second passenger (right), got angry with the older man (center) and confronted him before the flight took off from Mesa, Arizona, to Provo, Utah.
In accordance with Allegiant Air policies, all passengers are required to wear appropriate face masks and face shields cannot be used as a solitary substitute.
“All passengers are required to wear a face mask that covers their nose and mouth at all times during travel,” the policy says.
“Prohibited coverings include those with exhalation valves, holes (such as lace or mesh), gaiters and bandanas.
“Face shields can be worn in addition to a face mask, but not as an alternative.”
Lansford said she arrived on the flight just before the scheduled take-off and the incident began shortly after.
“Almost immediately, a flight attendant walks up to the guy sitting behind us and says, ‘Sir, I need you to put on a face mask that covers your mouth and nose,’ Lansford said.
Rylie Lansford (left and right): “It was absolutely crazy for me because everything revolves around a mask, and it didn’t have to be the case”
She claimed the older man would not comply with the flight attendant’s request and argued that he was not obligated to do so.
“He’s got a face shield so he didn’t want to wear an extra mask and he said ‘I don’t have to wear one,’ Lansford said. “He didn’t have it.
Lansford added that the man wearing the face shield acted “Really rude” and “condescending” to the flight attendant when she approached him.
Then the masked passenger sitting near Lansford turned around to confront the older man over his apparent refusal.
Lansford: “Then I hear and see just an arm movement, and I just bolted to the front of the plane with the flight attendants”
“At first I thought they were jokes with friends because it was a little weird, but you quickly learned that the words they said to each other weren’t friendly,” Lansford told KSL-TV. .
The second man asked the older passenger to put on an appropriate face mask, and Lansford said he was in a hurry to catch the flight.
“He kept saying, ‘My mother is in a hospice. I need to come home, ”Lansford.
When a second flight attendant determined that the older man would be removed from the robbery, Lansford said the punches began to fly.
“Then I hear and see just an arm movement, and I just bolted to the front of the plane with the flight attendants,” she told KSL-TV.
In accordance with Allegiant Air policies, all passengers are required to wear appropriate face masks and face shields cannot be used as a single substitute
Lansford said the older man and a woman who appeared to be with him were eventually pulled from the plane. The second man was allowed to stay and continue the flight.
A flight attendant later told Lansford, “Oh, you get a glimpse of what we’re up to.
Major airlines, from Spirit to American, have adopted face mask policies after the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe.
Companies like Delta Airlines have implemented some of the strictest flight rules of the days of the pandemic.
In July, the company announced it would require medical examinations for passengers who cannot wear face masks due to health concerns.
The airline has also pledged to leave the middle seat of planes empty to reduce the distance between passengers and promote safe travel.
