SAINT-DENIS, France (AP) – Two of football’s greatest teams have failed to shine as France’s World Cup winner and European champion…
Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo failed to add to his 101 international goals and drew again after a 0-0 draw against Spain in a friendly. He had a good chance in the second minute of added time, but goalkeeper Hugo Lloris repelled his oblique shot from the left.
Frenchman Kylian Mbappe was substituted towards the end after failing to make an impression against the Nations League champion’s resolute defense.
The draw means Portugal remain top of League A Group 3 ahead of France on goal difference, with both seven points and Croatia in three after beating Sweden 2-1 in the other group match of the night.
Despite all his goalscoring records, Ronaldo has failed to score in five career games against France and he has been scored well by former Real Madrid teammate Raphael Varane.
Still, Ronaldo had a first chance midway through the first half, but left-back Lucas Hernandez managed a superb tackle to keep him from shooting.
Ten minutes before the break, Ronaldo held his head in his hands after striker Joao Felix grabbed a pass from the left that seemed intended for Ronaldo.
France beat Ukraine 7-1 in a friendly on Wednesday, Olivier Giroud overtaking Michel Platini in second on the country’s all-time all-time scorer list with 42 goals, but was largely overpowered.
Giroud shot after the ball fell to him just before the break.
Moments after the break, Ronaldo made a mistake with a shot as a cross came from the left.
Substitute Renato Sanches had a shot easily saved by Lloris in added time, then Ronaldo missed a chance for his 102nd goal.
Portugal host Sweden and France is a World Cup finalist Croatia in Wednesday’s matches.
