A beheaded and suspicious teacher shot dead by police in France

PARIS – A history professor who opened a discussion with students about the cartoons of the prophet of Islam Muhammad was beheaded on a French street on Friday and police shot dead the suspected murderer, a police official said. The French anti-terrorism prosecutor has opened an investigation into the murder for murder with an alleged terrorist motive, the prosecution said. The horrific incident happened in the town of Eragny, in the Val d’Oise northwest of Paris.

A police official said the suspect, armed with a knife and an airsoft gun, was shot dead by police about 600 meters from where the teacher was killed. The teacher had been threatened after he opened a discussion “for a debate” on the cartoons, the police official told The Associated Press.

The official could not be named, not being authorized to discuss ongoing investigations.

It was the second terrorism-related incident since the opening of an ongoing trial over the January 2015 newsroom massacre at the satirical Charlie Hebdo newspaper.

The newspaper recently republished the prophet’s cartoons. A young Pakistani man was arrested after stabbing two people outside the newspaper’s former offices with non-fatal injuries.

This is a developing story. Check back later for more updates.
