There were eight new deaths from the coronavirus reported on Saturday – with a total of 68 deaths among the last four updates – but county health officials noted that does not mean that the eight deaths all occurred in in the last few days.
Data on deaths in the county is compiled from death certificates or collected during case investigations and can take weeks to process, officials said. The most recent deaths were on October 12, but some of them date back to June, county health director Dr Clayton Chau said at a press conference.
The county has recorded 1,409 virus-related deaths to date.
Of the deaths in Orange County, 524 were residents of skilled nursing facilities, 111 were in assisted living residences and four were listed as homeless.
The distribution of deaths by age in the county is as follows:
- 85 and over: 32% (452)
- 75 to 84: 22% (307)
- 65 to 74: 20% (277)
- 55 to 64: 14% (199)
- 45 to 54: 8% (111)
- 35 to 44: 3% (38)
- 25 to 34: 1.3% (20)
- 18-24 years old:
- 0 to 17:
It is estimated that about 90% of the cumulative cases reported, or 50,747 people on Saturday, have recovered. The number of people who have recovered is based on the previous cumulative 28-day case count.
The county also reported 159 patients in hospitals with the coronavirus on Saturday. The peak in hospitalizations in Orange County was 722 patients on July 14. There were 56 patients listed in ICUs in Saturday’s report.
The county update also reported that 984,271 tests have been done for the coronavirus since testing began locally, and at least 8,723 tests have been reported in the past 24 hours.
Data released each day is preliminary and subject to change, officials say. Further information may become available as investigations of individual cases are completed.
