Zendaya Becomes Youngest to Win Emmy for Leading Actress in Drama Series – Deadline

Zendaya made history tonight, not only by scoring her first Emmy win for HBO euphoria but also become the youngest to do so in this category at 24 years old. Facing fierce competition, Zendaya defeated last year’s winner Jodie Comer, who until today held the title for the youngest to receive this award, along with Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Colman, Laura Linney and Sandra Oh.Zendaya, who becomes the second black woman to win in this category after Viola Davis, received the award for her performance as Rue, a struggling teenage girl struggling with drug addiction.

After thanking the TV Academy, its cast members and show creator and EP Sam Levinson, she made sure to say hello to the youth.

“It’s a really weird time to celebrate, but I just want to say that there is hope in young people,” she said accepting the award, joined at a distance by her ‘family’ and her team.

“I know our TV show doesn’t always seem like a good example of this, but there is hope among young people. To my peers who work in the streets, I see you, I admire you, thank you.

Euphoria season 2 is currently underway, but production was put on hold when the pandemic hit. Zendaya recently teased on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to guest host Ben Platt that “the producers are working on a bridge episode that can be done with a limited crew”, so “to have something to live on until we can get into season two” .
