World Health Organization – Telephone conversation between Jean-Yves Le Drian and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (Sep 7, 2020)


Mr Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, spoke today by telephone with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).The Minister again signaled France’s full support for the action of the WHO and its Director-General in the management of the COVID-19 crisis.

Jean-Yves Le Drian and his interlocutor discussed means for the international community to prepare more effectively for future health crises. With this in mind, the Minister referred to the Franco-German proposals for strengthening the multilateral health architecture, in particular with regard to improving the classification of alert levels and the implementation of the International Health Regulations.

The Minister and the Director-General of WHO also referred to the Haut Conseil’s “One Health” project, which aims to produce and publish reliable and independent scientific information on the links between human, animal and ecosystem health, and have agreed to work on it.

They highlighted the progress made in the implementation of the ACT-A Initiative, a multilateral response to the current health crisis. Launched by France, the WHO and the European Commission, this initiative aims to promote the development and universal and equitable access to diagnostics, treatments and vaccines against COVID-19 and to strengthen health systems. The international community must continue to mobilize to support ACT-A.

Mr Jean-Yves Le Drian and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus gave an update on the project for a WHO Academy in Lyon, intended to train decision-makers and health professionals from all over the world.

They agreed to continue their discussions on all these points.
