Wolverhampton Wanderers’ hopes of landing Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Arsenal have been dealt another blow, according to reports.
The 23-year-old is a target for Wolves who are considering a number of additions to Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad this summer.
Capable of playing in midfield and at the back, Maitland-Niles would offer a new option in a number of positions.
Arsenal have reportedly turned down a £ 15million opening offer from Wolves, who were expected to come back with a higher offer.
But it was reported over the weekend that the Gunners were ready to offer Maitland-Niles a new deal to keep him in the Emirates this season.
The former England youth international was named man of the match as Arsenal beat Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield on Saturday and received a first call-up from England.
The Sun is now reporting that Arsenal has raised their asking price in yet another wolf deterrent.
Jorge Mendes will facilitate a move that will see his client Faouzi Ghoulam join Wolves “in the coming weeks”, according to reports in Italy.
Wolves’ need to get to the backcourt has taken on added significance in recent days, after Matt Doherty sealed his shock transfer to Tottenham.
Nuno Espirito Santo was already on the verge of being in the aid market for the post, with Jonny Otto facing a long time on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

Napoli defender Ghoulam has been closely linked with a move to Molineux, having recovered from his own long-term injury last season.
According to a report in the Corriere del Mezzogiorno (via Sport Witness), super-agent Mendes, who has close ties to Wolves bosses, is actively trying to find a move for his representative, with limited chances in Naples.
The report suggests that talks between Mendes and Wolves are ongoing, but goes so far as to say that he “should be transferred to Wolves in the coming weeks”.
Moussa Marega will be hoping to seal his dream transfer to the Premier League before the window closes in October.
The Porto forward has been linked with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the past 12 months, with Nuno Espirito Santo having been familiar with the striker since he was coach at Estádio do Dragão.
Wolves are looking to sign another striker in this window to compete with first-choice striker Raul Jimenez, while Nuno also urgently needs to strengthen at the back following Matt Doherty’s move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Marega had another good season in front of goal for Porto last season with 12 goals in 29 appearances, bringing his Primeira Liga tally to 45 in 95 appearances for the Portuguese club.
But, with Marega now in his peak professional years, he is keen to move to England.
Marega’s agent, Aziz Ben Aissa, told A Bola: “At 29, Moussa is no longer old enough to have dreams. Playing in the Premier League is more than an illusion is a goal, as it will be for most footballers. “
Piers talks about Doherty
The move of Matt Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Tottenham Hotspur came as a shock to many.
The Republic of Ireland international recently celebrated his 10th birthday at Molineux and has spoken of ending his playing career in old gold.
But barely had the #DecadeOfDoc disappeared from the Wolves’ Twitter timeline, a £ 15million deal was struck to sell the 28-year-old to Spurs.

The move even shocked some Spurs fans after evidence of Doherty’s allegiance to rival Arsenal was unearthed. In all fairness, Doherty has since played his part in fixing this by starring in a fun video in which he deletes the tweets in question.
After completing the move, Doherty said, “I am extremely happy. I am very proud to join such a great club.
“With the size of the club and the manager, once I knew there was interest, it was obvious to me to go to London. “
However, Piers Morgan – who is a strong Arsenal supporter – opposed Doherty’s move to Spurs and targeted the defender.
“He certainly didn’t use any brain to make the decision,” Morgan said.
