Three more tickets were awarded to the UFC at DWCS Season 4: Week 5 Tuesday night in Las Vegas.
William Knight, Ronnie Lawrence, Jimmy Flick are all heading to the UFC, Dana White has confirmed following the event at UFC APEX.
Melsik Baghdasaryan faced Dennis Buzukja in the main featherweight event. Using his well-established strike, Baghdasaryan set the tone with a barrage of knees, elbows, kicks and punches and put his counterpart in early danger. After a clinch against the fence, Baghdasaryan landed four to five hard elbows and a nasty header, while Buzukja showed his tenacity. The Armenian fighter continued to spread it throughout the first round with a variety of powerful strikes, but the Buzukja resident of Staten Island was able to finish the round with some momentum after successfully pulling out and controlling the body to body.
Baghdasaryan’s standing advantage continued until the second round, although his pace slowed to a more calculated pace. Buzukja landed a nice throw halfway through the race and grabbed his opponent’s back momentarily before landing a clean knee to the jaw. Buzukja started dictating a faster pace and landed on the toes much more frequently as the time went on.
In the final round, Baghdasaryan was able to get back on track by making his shots count. Much like the first round, Baghdasaryan was able to land a consistent left hand and kick the body. Just under two minutes from the end of the fight, Buzukja nearly finished the fight with an armband, but Baghdasaryan was able to survive and come out of the round after having a second wind to win the unanimous decision.
Flyweights got into a fight in the main co-event as Jimmy Flick took on Nate Smith. The LFA champion had his struggling opponent on the mat for most of the fight, but tough Smith was able to survive countless submissions that would have ended the fight for the most part in his stead.
Eventually, “The Brick” took Smith up in round three and made his way to an arm-triangle choke which resulted in Smith being forced to type.
In a bantamweight fight, Ronnie Lawrence entered APEX as a big underdog against Jose Johnson. Using a series of 15 minute takedowns, Lawrence was able to pick up a clean sweep from the judges en route to a unanimous decision victory.
William Knight, New England’s top-ranked light heavyweight, made the most of his second appearance in the Contender Series with another finish, this time in the first round. “Knightmare” overcame some early adversity to clinch an ugly first-round TKO victory over previously undefeated Cody Brundage.
Tucker Lutz won a unanimous decision victory over Cody Gibson in the opening contest. Although he didn’t get a contract, White revealed that another season of the Contender series will debut in November and Lutz – along with Baghdasaryan, Buzukja and Smith – will be invited back to get another hit.
