“Our church is closed. We are broadcasting services, but there is nothing like being able to see your brothers and sisters, greet them and show them love, ”he explained.
Distance is bad for mental health, Robinson said, and he wants to better understand how to provide services to members of his church. This is why he supports the recent launch by Mount Sinai of a survey called “Speak Up On COVID”. It’s an effort of the Hospital System’s recently established Health Equity Research Institute.
“Our goal is to conduct the kind of research on the inequalities that people face,” said Dr. Carol Horowitz, co-director of the institute. “Do the kind of research that is not for research, but actually find answers and solutions that will make people healthier and help eliminate the inequalities, the unfair inequalities that some New Yorkers face. ”
The researchers say more than 3,000 New Yorkers have responded to the survey so far, but they want 10,000 people from under-represented communities, such as minority groups, people who don’t speak English, or LGBTQ people.
“We are not the team that says, ‘Who is most likely to get COVID, who is most likely to be hospitalized for COVID.’ This is not what we are asking for, ”explained Horowitz. “We ask, ‘What is the impact of the pandemic on you and your family? Whether you have it or not. Whether a loved one has it or not. ”
The survey asks how the pandemic is affecting jobs, education and even food. The goal is to identify needs so that the hospital system can work with its 100 community partners, such as Bethel Gospel Assembly, to meet them.
Regarding mental health, Horowitz said that to date, the survey shows that three in four New Yorkers show symptoms of anxiety, half have symptoms of depression and almost half show signs. of PTSD.
Robinson, who recently responded to the survey, said the services explained and offered at the end was reason enough for members of his church to participate.
“Once a person answers the survey and they get to that last page, they can meet their need, their immediate need, so that’s another good reason to take this survey,” he said. he declared.
