Warren Buffett’s Railroad appoints Kathryn Farmer as first female CEO of major US railroad

BNSF Railway, one of North America’s largest rail operators and owned by Berkshire Hathaway Inc, announced Monday that it has appointed Kathryn Farmer as CEO, replacing Carl Ice, who had led the company since 2013.

Farmer, who currently serves as the company’s executive vice president of operations, will assume the roles of managing director and chairman on Jan. 1, BNSF said in a statement.

Ice will retire at the end of 2020, but will remain on the board of directors of the company, he added.

“Carl (Ice) has been instrumental in the success of BNSF for a very long time. I thank him for his leadership and accomplishments, ”Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett said in a statement.

“We look forward to Katie (Farmer’s) leadership and more success. It has all the qualities that inspire us for the future. ”
