A former Premier League star has accused Virgil van Dijk of being ARROGANT as Liverpool were saved by Mohamed Salah on the Premier League’s opening day.

Salah’s late penalty saved all three points for the Reds at Anfield, as the Egyptian ace managed a hat-trick to send his side back to a 4-3 victory.

Leeds impressed on their return to the top flight after 16 years, coming back from a goal three times before Salah’s late kick – his second penalty of the game – doomed them to a day one defeat.

Although Liverpool’s attack was as strong as ever, their defense was woefully below par and delivered a performance not seen since before Van Dijk moved to Anfield in January 2018.

The Reds’ backline was transformed overnight when the Netherlands ace joined Southampton, as Liverpool went from calamitous to calm and porous to unrivaled with just one signing.

But Liverpool’s defensive woes resurfaced on Saturday night as Leeds easily cut their baseline, and former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor accused Van Dijk of being arrogant and not making the required effort against Marcelo Bielsa’s team.

“Everyone knows Virgil van Dijk is an incredible defender,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT’s Weekend Sports Breakfast. “On the ball, he can reverse the diagonals and, defensively, nobody wants to run into him.

“But I felt that yesterday’s performance was, by Van Dijk, arrogant; that flick he did in the goal he gave was like ‘we’re playing Leeds United, it’s going to be an easy game and I can drop my standards’.

Van Dijk made a huge mistake which directly led Patrick Bamford to score for Leeds

“And in this game he did [let his standards drop].

“Even Trent Alexander-Arnold, on the right, was also mediocre defensively.

“Van Dijk is a great defender, and he will be one of the greatest defenders to ever play the game, but when people start to put him in the squad Vincent Kompany and Rio Ferdinand…

“I think people forget how good some players were over time.

“People forget how good Rio Ferdinand was in his prime; you wouldn’t even want to go to the same side of the field as him!

“It was the same with Kompany, and John Terry too; you wouldn’t want to face them because you wouldn’t stand a chance.

Adrian Durham says Liverpool will NOT win Premier League title and could end up behind Manchester United

“Virgil van Dijk is an incredible defender, but you can’t put him in that category of Rio Ferdinand and Vincent Kompany yet. ”

Agbonlahor actually deepened his criticism by claiming that Leeds’ ENTIRE defense was arrogant against Leeds on Saturday night.

“I feel like it was Liverpool’s defensive arrogance today,” he added during Sports Bar Weekender. “As if they hadn’t realized how good the Leeds team were.

“I think a lot of teams that watch Leeds will be more wary of the way they play, and it could be a wake-up call for Liverpool as well.”
