USF suspends football pending coronavirus test results

A day after Notre Dame postponed its next game against Wake Forest, its previous opponent, South Florida, called for a halt to football activities pending test results for a possible coronavirus spreading among the players. The USF said it was in suspension until it received test results on Wednesday, but said tests carried out last Friday before its 52-0 loss to Notre Dame as well as tests after Monday’s match had not resulted in any positive cases.

The school said the break in activities was due to “great caution”.

USF is due to play FAU this Saturday. FAU has yet to play a game this season due to programming difficulties related to viruses.

Notre Dame has postponed its match against Wake Forest, scheduled for Saturday, due to a COVID-19 epidemic in the team. Seven Irish players have tested positive. Combined with the previous week’s test results, 13 players are currently in isolation, 10 of whom are in quarantine.

“We knew COVID would present challenges throughout the season, and we will always put the health and safety of student-athletes at the forefront of our decision-making,” Irish coach Brian Kelly said in a statement Tuesday. . “We can’t wait to resume team activities and get back on the pitch. ”

USF is examining in-game contact tracing, although CDC guidelines require contact within 6 feet for more than 15 minutes with someone who tests positive, and several coaches have said playing conditions typical would not meet these criteria. Ahead of the season, Miami and Virginia Tech conducted practice studies and found that two players were likely not in contact radius for more than 15 minutes.

USF has not announced a decision on whether Saturday’s game against FAU will be played.
