Chelsea diverts Declan Rice’s attention to Boubakary Soumare
According to The Athletic (h / t Express), Chelsea have rekindled their interest in Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare.
The Blues took advantage of a brilliant transfer window. Chelsea have already signed five first-team players who could all have a major impact on our chances this season.
Club business is far from over. It looked like Chelsea would then target a center-back with West Ham United ace Declan Rice billed as the favorite.
According to the report, the Blues have now changed their plans and are no longer looking for a new center-back. Frank Lampard now wants to recruit a new midfielder.
The Blues boss’s decision is based on the belief that either Jorginho or N’Golo Kante could leave the club this summer. Rice plays as a defensive midfielder and also tops the list.
However, it also brings us back to Soumare, with whom we had a strong bond last January. The trail had since turned cold but seems to have resumed.
Chelsea scouts have already observed the Frenchman, who could be set to leave Lille this summer. The same was confirmed by the president of the club, Gérard Lopez.
The midfielder made 30 appearances for Lille last season. He also played in the club’s two Champions League games against Chelsea, giving the Blues hierarchy a glimpse of his abilities.
Compared to French superstar Paul Pogba, Soumare is highly rated and has the potential to become a world class midfielder. (h / t Football London)

A major red flag could turn out to be the player’s inability to contribute defensively.
Of the 44 central midfielders to have amassed more than 1,000 minutes in Ligue 1 last season, Soumare was ranked 43rd in defensive duels every 90 minutes. He also picked up two red cards, which could call his temper into question.
It remains to be seen if Chelsea will make a move for the Frenchman.
