Trent Alexander-Arnold gives Jurgen Klopp a welcome boost but Liverpool transfer issue remains

Trent Alexander-Arnold gave Jurgen Klopp a welcome boost following his return from injury on Saturday night. As Liverpool beat Blackpool 7-2 at Anfield in their last preseason friendly, the right-back was on international duty with England for their Nations League opener against Iceland.

Having missed the entire preseason so far due to injury, the right-back made his return as a 73rd-minute substitute in place of Jadon Sancho following Kyle Walker’s sacking for the Three Lions.

Starting from the center-back alongside Eric Dier, the 23-year-old has improved his performance compared to recent pre-season performances.

However, he was booked after making a clumsy foul to knock Holmbert Fridjonsson into the dying embers of the match in Reykjavik, although Birkir Bjarnason missed the resulting penalty.

However, his injury record remains worrying, with midfielder Fabinho and youngsters Ki-Jana Hoever, Sepp van den Berg, Nat Phillips and Billy Koumetio being the only recognized alternatives.

Dutch duo Hoever and Van den Berg drew attention against the Seasiders, the latter scoring his first goal for the club, but 17-year-old Koumetio didn’t enjoy the easier start.

Meanwhile, Phillips is expected to move on before the transfer window ends next month.

For now, ECHO understands the Reds aren’t actively targeting a new center-back, with club chiefs believing they have enough in this area to challenge again.

However, with a month before the window closes, Klopp and Michael Edwards have a lot to think about and there is nothing to rule out a late move from a center-back if circumstances and financial circumstances change.
