Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team) – winner of stage 17 and third in the GC
“I am really happy and very emotional. We worked very hard for this and it was not easy to get there. I am emotional.
“It’s amazing, it’s for my wife and my son. It’s hard to be away from them but it’s my job. But I think about them all the time.“We were confident because we knew the terrain was suitable for us. It was over 2000 meters above sea level, just like home [Colombia] and so it was an opportunity for me, so we fought for this step. “(ASO)
Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) – second overall, third in stage 17
“I’m happy with my performance, it was a really difficult day. Bahrain [McLaren] The tempo was very fast on the Madeleine, and on the Col de la Loze, the race exploded in the last kilometers. In this difficult final, I’m happy not to waste any more time. It’s still accessible – tomorrow is another tough day. We’ll see what we can do but I think we can be happy with the way we’ve been riding so far. We will fight to the end.
“It was just steep sections then flat sections, it was really difficult for me today. It was also at altitude – one of the toughest finals I’ve ever done.
« [Riding for mountain classification points] I saw that on Madeleine there were 10 free points so I went and then I also got a lot of points – if I am able to take it, I will take it. I’m glad I have two jerseys now. The goal is still the general classification, if I can’t take the yellow, I can take it. “(ASO)
Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma) – fourth on stage 17
“We may have put a team apart to get on today, either for the stage or to make it difficult for others who are trying to get on the podium. [McLaren] made a really strong rhythm. They did great the first 10 to 15 kilometers of this last climb. They were going really fast, so hats off to them, but on that last climb here it was just a total kick.
“I was driving up front and accelerated over on one of the [flatter] transitions. I looked back and no one was behind me actually. Suddenly Lopez ran into me and I tried to stay with him but he was going really strong. At that point, when I knew I was over the limit, I backed up and tried to beat Primož a bit, accelerated with him. Yeah, that was good. “[[[[EuroSport]
Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) – eighth in stage 17 and fifth in the GC
“One of the first climbs we’ve really been at altitude, so yeah, a tough day. I stayed there as long as I could so I can be happy with that.
“Once we got into the last 7 kilometers we went pretty easily for the first part. I think everyone was sort of saying they didn’t know what to expect then it was UAE. [Team Emirates] started to ride at a steady pace. From there it was every man for himself and I hung on for as long as I could and yes I tried I guess.
“We have a big stage tomorrow, similar altitude [in] meters so it’s going to be a really tough day. After that all we have is the TT so a great day in the mountains and a day all alone so we will continue. I hope that tomorrow I will have good legs and I will keep trying. “(Mitchelton-Scott)
Damiano Caruso (Bahrain McLaren) – 13th in stage 17
“It’s a terrible climb, terrible because the slope keeps changing.
“I saw a really strong team. We have shown that we are a team. We went to the bottom but have no regrets. If you don’t try, you never know. We gave everything and therefore we have no regrets. . [Mikel] Landa didn’t collapse, he gave everything and so it’s okay.
“I felt good until the final but these steep slopes are too much for me. ” (ITV)
Pello Bilbao (Bahrain McLaren) – 22nd on stage 17
“We were clear that we had come to the Tour to fight for the podium, that was the goal from the start. The road has not been easy so far – we have had so many difficulties from the start – but the intention has always been the same. We have been patient, we have waited for the right time, and with the Jumbo [Visma] team, it was really difficult to try something in the other stages, so we waited for today’s stage [to work at the front and make a move for Mikel Landa].
“We knew we had an opportunity, with the last six kilometers so difficult and also the altitude, and at that point the team was not important, so we tried to bring the race as fast as possible. . We used all the power of the team, we all put in the maximum effort, and the result was not what we expected but we cannot ask for more of the team. We tried to the end, and tomorrow we will also try to surprise. It will be difficult but we still have an opportunity.
« Mikel [Landa] felt good. It usually ends well in week three so we still wanted to give it a try from the start. We planned everything on the bus, and everything went well. The team was in good shape, each of us worked at the right time, and we tried to control and make a tough pace. Then we saw that the Tour is the Tour and we also have a lot of powerful rivals. “(ITV)
