Since returning from Chelsea, Costa has struggled to get in shape at the Wanda Metropolitano. He only scored five goals in 30 appearances in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side last season.
The 31-year-old scored in Atletico’s 6-1 demolition of Granada on Sunday – a game in which Luis Suarez made his debut.
Suarez, who has just arrived from Barcelona, has scored twice, and perhaps it is the Uruguayan who is pushing Costa up the pecking order.
Joao Felix is expected to be Suarez’s first striking partner and Brand Monday’s front page suggests its future is on hold.
After the victory over Granada, the striker spoke candidly about his future.

“I let the club decide my future. At no time did I want to fight to be a burden here, on the contrary ”, said Costa. Movistar LaLiga.
“I said it very clearly to the club. I would listen that if they sold me, if there was a possibility of giving in, I would leave, if they wanted the termination to be free, I would accept that too.
“I spoke with the club, with the coach and made it very clear what was going on, that if I am, I’m going to fight and keep fighting, and if the injuries respect me. I’ll be there, but if they see the option to go and go, well I’m available.
Costa, who fired Atletico to the La Liga title in 2014, has been linked with a move away from the club.
Tottenham were mentioned as contenders for the striker last month. the Daily Star claimed the Spurs had been offered to Costa, who has only 12 months left to live on his contract.
Jose Mourinho is said to be interested in another center-forward, and he may well want to reunite with Costa.

The report in the Daily Mirror claimed the Hammers are looking at all options.
“One of us can fight and the other can bite”
Costa, despite the lack of clarity about his future, was in high spirits and joked about Suarez’s arrival.
“He’s very good, one of us can do the fight and the other can bite,” Costa said.
“We are very lucky to have Luis, I don’t understand how Barca could have let him go,” Costa said.
“He’s going to help us with a lot of goals as well as his warrior spirit and his thirst for trophies. I hope he can help us win another trophy for our fans, but we have to take each game as it comes.
