Klay Thompson took to court with his Golden State Warriors teammates on Friday for the first time since Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals.

Thompson missed the entire 2019-20 season as he returned from an ACL injury and head coach Steve Kerr said just having him on the floor this week seemed to trigger the Warriors during their minicamp:

“First, it was great to see him. It’s a sight for sore eyes, ”Kerr told me. “It’s been 400 days since Klay was last in a Warriors game, or even practice, so it’s been a long time. It’s great to have him on the floor in the locker room, just his presence gave us a burst of energy and excitement. ”

The Warriors are holding their training session in what the team calls “Dubble” – an isolated environment where the roster and staff will train and remain in quarantine for two weeks of training – although Stephen Curry and Draymond Green were excused for family reasons.

That shouldn’t make Thompson’s presence any less important.

With the NBA set to begin the 2020-21 season around January, the shooting guard will need as much time as possible to not only regain his conditioning and strength, but also regain his rhythm on the floor and build a chemistry with new ones. teammates.

Thompson has yet to play with power forward Eric Paschall, small forward Andrew Wiggins or guards Jordan Poole and Ky Bowman.

Getting reps with likely key players next year is crucial for Thompson’s return.

“It was his first practice after an ACL injury,” Kerr he told me. « I didn’t expect him to be in great shape and he wasn’t. But he was moving well and it was a great first step. Klay got a lot of good work and was able to assess where he is now. ”

Prior to his injury, Thompson averaged 21.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists. If it manages to come close to those numbers, Golden State will be difficult to dispute.

The Warriors are hoping they can return to their league form next season after Kevin Durant leaves, a string of injuries and bad play derailed their 2019-20 campaign. With the second draft pick this year and a healthy line from Thompson, Curry and Green, it seems entirely possible.

The return of the starting shooting guard on the field has already brought them together to make it a reality.
