Staff at 2 New York Schools Test Positive for COVID-19 as Teachers Prepare for Students


NEW YORK CITY – At least two New York school staff have tested positive for the coronavirus since teachers returned to school on Tuesday, officials said.PS 1 and MS 88 personnel in Brooklyn were notified Tuesday evening. The contact tracers have opened an investigation into the close contacts. Education Ministry spokeswoman Miranda Barbot said any staff identified as close contacts should be quarantined.

“School staff have access to free and expedited testing and we have encouraged all staff to get tested before returning to the buildings as we continue to navigate the realities of a pandemic,” said Barbot. . “Our protocol is to immediately notify staff and Test and Trace will begin an investigation to determine close contacts. ”

New York City’s reopening protocols do not require schools to close when a single case is identified. Staff and students in this class will move on to distance learning.

The DOE has also opened an investigation into a possible personal coronavirus case at PS11.

Students are expected to return to school on September 21.
