Staff at 16 New York schools test positive for COVID-19 as teachers prepare for students: Union

NEW YORK CITY – Staff at 16 schools in New York City have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the union representing teachers. The teachers returned to the classrooms Tuesday week to prepare for the students. Classes are scheduled to resume on September 21.

Two cases of coronavirus had been confirmed on Wednesday.

“School staff have access to free and expedited testing and we have encouraged all staff to get tested before returning to the buildings as we continue to navigate the realities of a pandemic,” said Wednesday a spokesperson for the Ministry of Education. “Our protocol is to immediately notify staff and Test and Trace will begin an investigation to determine close contacts. ”

New York City’s reopening protocols do not require schools to close when a single case is identified. Staff and students in this class will move on to distance learning.
