A Spirit Airlines flight attendant threatened to call police on a passenger who was wearing a neck warmer to cover his face.

The incident, which occurred during a flight on the low-budget carrier last week, was recorded by the passenger and posted on social media.

The video was picked up by SV News on Friday and has since gone viral, with many questioning whether the neck guards – which can be pulled up over the nose and mouth – cover the face adequately for indoor flight.

The passenger’s gaiter was also covered in stars and stripes, prompting some to accuse the flight attendant of being anti-American – a charge which was quickly dismissed by Spirit.

The video begins with the flight attendant asking the passenger to put on a face mask provided by the airline. The passenger replies that he is already wearing a face mask.

“No,” scolds the attendant. ‘What do you have underneath [the gaiter]? It is not legal to wear. “

“Legal by whom? What’s wrong with my mask? the passenger moves back.

“It’s not legal according to the CDC,” said the officer, before saying later that “authorities” will wait for the passenger when the plane lands.

The passenger claims that he flew “20 times” wearing only the neck protector over his nose and mouth and that he encountered no problems.

Video stops before the issue is resolved and it is not known if police subsequently encountered the man at the arrivals gate.

Spirit stands alongside the flight attendant, issuing a statement Friday, which reads in part: “CDC cautions that gaiters may not be effective, which is why we are asking customers to double gaiters so they are double layered. and chin hugging, or wear a standard earloop covering underneath.

The incident divided Twitter users, with one writing: “I’ve been a lover of the American flag all along. These neck warmers are worthless. I used one on the farm while horseback riding and they don’t even filter dust. It’s like taking the thinnest t-shirt you can imagine and putting it over your mouth.

However, others vehemently disagreed.

One wrote: “I was literally given a mask like this by American airlines… so they can be worn… it must be because it’s a flag… I smell legal action. “.

Spirit responded to the anti-American accusations by stating, “Spirit Airlines proudly welcomes anyone on board who wishes to show their pride with an American flag on a face that respects our policy.

“Our flight attendants asked the guest in this video to line his gaiter. When he refused, they offered him an earring mask to place under his gaiter, and he also refused that option.
