Luis Enrique jumped in to defend Manchester United’s under pressure goalkeeper David de Gea.
The 29-year-old has received a lot of criticism after making some high-profile mistakes for United.
However, he was in inspired form in Spain’s 1-1 draw against Germany in the Nations League on Thursday as he made impressive saves, including one to thwart Leroy Sane.
Luis Enrique praised David de Gea after the goalkeeper impressed Spain on Thursday
Enrique pointed out that De Gea deserved more praise and said Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was in a similar situation when it comes to scrutiny of his performance.
‘The [De Gea] has played a lot of games like this in England, ”Enrique said, as Marca reported.
“We watch him extensively, but he and Kepa make the headlines if they make a mistake. They are used to it.
“With the game he played, we should say what a great goalie we have.
“I’m going to encourage them not to collapse and it’s a position I demand a lot.
“But because the press gives them a hard time, I treat them more affectionately.
“They both know their mistakes are more visible than those of other players, but they’re used to it. “
Enrique said some of the Manchester United goalkeeper’s criticisms were unwarranted.
De Gea, who made excellent saves, faces a battle to retain his No.1 spot for United
De Gea faces a battle to retain his spot as United’s top-choice goalkeeper next season, with Dean Henderson returning from his loan at Sheffield United.
The highly regarded Henderson has signed a new contract with United but has stressed he would not be willing to replace De Gea.
Spain are back in action on Sunday when they host Ukraine in another Nations League clash, and De Gea is hoping to make a major impact again.
Attention will then turn to the intriguing goalkeeper situation at United, but De Gea has shown for Spain that he is still capable of producing impressive performances.
Former United defender Gary Neville believes De Gea will start the season as United’s first-choice goalscorer.
Neville told Sky Sports: “De Gea is definitely starting out as No.1 because there was a point where Ole could have let him down towards the end of the season.
“However, he stayed with him at that time and we’re only four weeks later. “
