Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case and after several failed attempts to find an outfit, she walked out of the store wearing a size 26 dress – leaving her discouraged and in tears.
This is what prompted her to join her local group Slimming World and lose weight for good – a move that she says saved her life and her marriage.
The super skinny ones of Cambridgeshire
After moving from her hometown of Ipswich to Cambridge for work in August 2013, Carol, now 54, and her husband Joe, fell into an unhappy pattern.
The nights would be spent on the sofa in front of the soaps and the days would be spent at work. The romance was gone and everything got a bit routine.
But now the couple are stronger – and more in love – than ever before, and in January of this year, her husband proposed again. They are ready to renew their wedding vows next year.
But the path to losing weight – and keeping it off – is one that many of us constantly find ourselves in. And Carol says she was no exception to this rule.
Carol said she weighed 18 stone 13 pounds at her heaviest.
“I used to join and join Slimming World a lot,” she says.
“I would lose about a stone and a half and then stop because I had an upset stomach, which I always attributed to eating lots of fruits and vegetables.
“But then I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease – and I got the help I needed.
“I knew I fell for it when my husband and I joined our local group in 2017 and the weight continued to drop stone by stone.
Now at her target weight of 11 stones 10 pounds, (over seven stones lost) Carol has been given new life and a new career to start.
“I love Slimming World because you can eat so much free food that doesn’t need to be weighed or measured.
“And it teaches you that the things you need to weigh are for health reasons.
“Slimming World taught me to fall in love with food again – I never used to spend hours in the kitchen, but now I cook everything from scratch and love it.
“I also went from doing absolutely no exercise to a 5k.
“I was hoping to take it to 10 km or a half marathon, but I had to protect myself from the coronavirus, so I was caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.
“Next year will be my year. I have big dreams to realize. “
Speaking about her new role as a Slimming World consultant, Carol said, “It was something I wanted to do for a while, but I wanted to be at my target weight first.
“So when I reached my goal in January of this year, I started to think about it properly.
“And during the lockdown, I decided this was something I really wanted to do and realized that now is the time for me to share my life-changing experiences with other people.
Carol takes up her position as Waterbeach Slimming World Consultant on Monday October 5th and welcomes anyone planning to lose weight to contact her on 07877751614 to reserve their spot for the group.
The rules for participating in Slimming World groups have changed due to Covid-19, so please call before participating.
Carol will work as a consultant alongside her full-time job as Manager of Student Services at North Cambridge Academy.
When asked about her favorite Slimming World friendly recipes, Carol was quick to defend the fake, which she says is a hit with her three grown children.
“Whenever my kids come to visit me, they always ask for my fake Chinese,” she said.
“I make sure to cook all the favorites like crispy beef, chicken curry, fries and egg fried rice – to make them a real treat. And that’s free food.
But Carol said Slimming World gave her more than just a new zest for life by bringing her new friends as well.
“Slimming World is also a social experience.
“I watch my Saturday Slimming World group as a family.
“When I reached my target weight, my husband proposed to me again, in front of the whole group.
“They were all in tears – so they knew we were renewing our vows before our children even did!”
Finally, when asked if anyone could change the weight for good, the mother replied, “I think all you need is the right person to inspire you.
