Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Michael Caputo said without evidence that health experts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were hosting a “resistance unit” to the president during a Facebook Live Sunday, Le New York Times reported.
In his Facebook Live, Mr. Caputo claimed that career scientists “had not taken out of their sweatpants except for meetings in cafes” to plot “how they are going to attack Donald Trump”, according to Le New York Times.
“There are scientists who work for this government who do not want America to recover, not before Joe Biden is president”, he added, accusing these experts of “sedition”.
The CDC generally operates as a non-partisan organization with experts who have worked under multiple administrations. Its headquarters, located in Atlanta, Georgia, help the organization stay out of the political bubble that is Washington DC.
No one within the organization was mentioned by Mr. Caputo except CDC director Dr. Robert Redfield.
« [Dr Redfield] is one of my closest friends in Washington, ”Mr. Caputo said. “He’s such a good man.
Mr Caputo’s comments, which were made at a private event on his personal Facebook page to 5,000 friends, came after it was reported by Politico on Friday that senior HHS officials were interfering with the publication of the reports of the CDC on the coronavirus pandemic.
The main House Democrats have now opened an investigation into the allegations.
Mr Caupto also claimed on his Facebook Live that Mr Trump would win the presidential election in November, but Democratic candidate Joe Biden would be unlikely to give in.
“When Donald Trump refuses to step down at the inauguration, the shooting will begin,” he said. “If you carry arms, buy ammunition, ladies and gentlemen, because it will be difficult to obtain. “
In addition to claiming that CDC officials were working against the president, Mr. Caupto also said his family’s safety was in danger.
“You understand they’re going to have to kill me, and unfortunately I think that’s where it’s going,” Mr. Caputo said.
In a statement, the HHS called Mr Caputo “an essential and integral part of the president’s response to the coronavirus, leading public messages as Americans need public health information to defeat the Covid-19 pandemic” .
Mr. Caputo is a veteran and loyalist of the 2016 Trump campaign who was later named the president’s HHS spokesperson in April. None of the spokesperson’s claims came with evidence of genuine “sedition” within the CDC, but it followed in the footsteps of the claims the president has been pushing in recent months.
In August, the president accused members of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of being in “deep state” and working against his administration on coronavirus therapy and vaccine development. FDA commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn denied the charges.
Mr. Caupto said Le New York Times that he and his family have been “continually threatened” since joining the administration.
“It weighs heavily on us and we deeply appreciate President Trump’s friendship and support as we address these issues and ensure the safety of our children,” he added.
But he vowed to stay in government and help the Trump administration.
“I’m not going anywhere… I swear to God, as God is my witness, I don’t stop.”
