In an interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on “State of the Union,” Schiff was asked about Barr’s claim from last week’s interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that China interferes more with elections than Russia.

“It’s just a simple and false statement from the Attorney General. A misrepresentation, ”Schiff said, claiming,“ you can tell that Bill Barr is outright lying to the American people, and it’s tragic, but it’s that simple. ”

He added, “It’s such a disservice to the country that we can’t trust our own Attorney General, but apparently Bill Barr is willing to do or say anything to help Donald Trump. ”

CNN has contacted the Justice Department for comment.

Schiff’s comments follow the announcement last week of an intelligence bulletin released by the Department of Homeland Security warning that Russia is trying to cast doubt on the integrity of the 2020 election by amplifying False postal voting claims resulting in widespread fraud, claims that have been pushed repeatedly by President Donald Trump.

“We believe Russia is likely to continue to amplify criticism of postal voting and change voting processes amid the COVID-19 pandemic to undermine public confidence in the electoral process,” the ballot read.

The news came a day after Barr’s interview with Blitzer, in which he downplayed Russia’s well-documented attempts to help Trump in the presidential elections, including this election cycle, instead pointing the finger at China despite the fact that intelligence agencies did not say that Beijing was actively meddling in the elections.

“Because I saw intelligence. That’s what I concluded, ”Barr said.

Yet the bulletin adds to the well-documented body of evidence that Russia is interfering in a US presidential election again and also makes it clear that Moscow is tailoring its message to amplify false narratives that benefit the Trump campaign.

Last month, the senior election security official for the US intelligence community said in a statement that Russia was trying to “denigrate” former Vice President Joe Biden’s candidacy for the White House, but in in the weeks that followed, Trump and members of his administration tried to get the president elected. victim of foreign meddling by selecting intelligence to suggest that China is trying to harm its campaign.

CNN’s Zachary Cohen contributed to this report.
