BUFFALO, NY – Rookie Alejandro Kirk became the first receiver 21 or under since Johnny Bench with at least four hits including two for extra goals, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Yankees 11-5 on Monday night for losing New York 1 1/2 games behind Minnesota for a field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.Kirk, who played in Class A last season and made his debut on September 12, single in third against Michael King, doubled in fourth against Jonathan Loaisiga, single in fifth against Nick Nelson and hit an opposite field circuit to the right in seventh Chad Green for his first four-stroke game.

“He’s always looking for a pitch to hit, and he did it today,” said Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo.

Speaking through a translator, Kirk called his big night “amazing”.

“I felt so comfortable tonight,” he said.

Bench accomplished the feat in a five-stroke game for Cincinnati in Philadelphia on August 3, 1969, according to STATS.

Randal Grichuk hit his first home run since Aug. 28 and scored two runs for the Blue Jays.

New York had won 10 straight wins before Sunday’s 10-2 loss at Fenway Park. The Yankees have allowed 10 or more points in consecutive games for the first time since July 25-26, 2019 to Boston and have lost for the third time in four games this year to the Blue Jays in Buffalo. Central gardener Aaron Hicks had trouble with the sky and the lights and dropped a ball between himself and the right-back Judge Aaron.

New York (31-23) lost 4 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay (36-19) for the lead of AL East. The Yankees are positioned to be the fifth seed in the playoffs and would play Minnesota (33-22).

“It’s been a tough day, but we’re good, we’re where we need to be,” Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton said. “We have to try to consolidate that in the last few games to get home. We know that. ”

The judge also said he saw no reason to be concerned as the postseason approached.

“The guys are always competing,” Judge said. “That’s all you can ask for.”

King (1-2) gave up five runs and five hits in 2 2/3 innings. Eight of 10 batters hit against Loaisiga, including one on wide receiver interference call on Gary Sánchez. Loaisiga requested that a bag of rosin be brought to the mound with the bases loaded. Boone said he would speak to Loaisiga to make sure he didn’t need the bag of rosin earlier in this round.

Right-hander of the Blue Jays Matt Shoemaker was left off the pre-game injury list to make his first appearance since Aug. 21 in Tampa Bay. He allowed one run and three hits in three innings.

Right handed TJ Zeuch (1-0) allowed a run in 3 1/3 innings.

Home plate umpire Chad Fairchild was hit in the face mask by a foul tip in the top of the second. Fairchild left the game between innings, with Paul Nauert moving behind the plate. Additional referee Sean Barber replaced Nauert.
