Eduardo Camavinga stunned to have been called up to France’s senior squad so early in his career after receiving the call from Didier Deschamps after Paul Pogba’s withdrawal due to a positive Covid-19 test for the Manchester United midfielder. The 17-year-old Rennes midfielder made his breakthrough at club level in the 2018-19 season when he was barely 16 and his progress since then has been impressive, arousing the interest of Real Madrid and several of the biggest clubs in the world.

The technically gifted playmaker has made 36 first-team appearances for Rennes last season despite his young age.

Camavinga played in Rennes’ first two matches of the new campaign and scored a brilliant – and decisive – goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Montpellier.

He received his first summons last week after Paul Pogba’s coronavirus diagnosis was confirmed and will be the youngest player to represent France since WWII if he plays against Sweden or Croatia in the Nations League.

Camavinga: “It’s a childhood dream, even though I’m still a child! “

When asked what it would mean for him if he played in either game, he told reporters: “ It would be fabulous for me, for my family.

“It’s a childhood dream, even though I’m still a child! It was important to them [his parents] that I represent my country, that was important to me too. It’s something that I wanted since I was a child. ”

Camavinga was born in Angola to Congolese parents before settling in France when he was only two years old.

Playing for France, he said, had always been one of his wishes and he feels well received by the team.

“I had a very good reception,” he added. ” The meeting with the players was very good. Everyone has been cool to me and I hope this will continue.

“I started very early in Ligue 1. Any player hopes to play with his [international] selection one day. It happened early for me, but I want to enjoy every moment. ”

Didier Deschamps rarely hesitated to give the young players of his France team a chance, with the emergence of Kylian Mbappé, a prime example of a young star being prominent for Les Bleus.

Camavinga admitted that the Paris Saint-Germain forward’s story could put a bit more pressure on him, but he prefers to see Mbappé as a source of inspiration.

He said: “Kylian has set the bar really high, but he’s an inspiration to all young players for sure. ”

He holds Pogba in high regard, adding: ” I am inspired by Paul Pogba. He is a very good player with great qualities.

“He proved it in the France team, see what he did – he’s a world champion. But I don’t really like comparisons. “
