The Rays, first place, finished the season with an 8-2 lead.
“No revenge,” said Brosseau, who signed his second career multihomer game. “We put everything behind us. We came today to play ball and win a series and end on a high note. [in the] regular season against these guys. ”
Chapman was suspended for three games by Major League Baseball, which he is appealing. New York manager Aaron Boone and his Tampa Bay counterpart Kevin Cash both received a one-game ban and served it on Wednesday night.
Brosseau capped Tampa Bay’s first inning with four runs against Jordan Montgomery (2-2) when he hit a 2-2 curve about 420 feet into the visitors’ paddock beyond the left center fence. Brosseau made it 5-0 in the fifth, hitting a 0-1 fastball in the Yankees’ box at center right.
“It was emotional,” said Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro, who was interim Cash manager. “Many of us had tears in our eyes, a special moment for him that we will never forget. It just shows this guy’s willingness to move on, put him behind him and play his game. ”
Brosseau had three hits and hit .500 (7 for 14) with three homers and seven RBIs against the Yankees this season.
There was no retaliation from the Rays one night after Cash appeared to threaten the Yankees in the wake of Chapman’s launch by saying, “And the last thing I will say about this is that I have a hell of a stable full of guys throwing 98 mph. . Period. ”
The only batter was the Rays’ Hunter Renfroe, who was struck in the leg in the fifth inning by a 95 mph fastball from Yankees reliever Ben Heller, which was quickly thrown by first base umpire. Chad Fairchild.
Heller tried to make his case, as did interim New York manager Carlos Mendoza before Luis Cessa came in to present.
Tensions have been running high between the teams in recent years, at least since Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia, now retired, was sent off for diving Jesus Sucre in 2018.
