Tadej Pogacar overtook the compatriot Primoz Roglic and is expected to become the youngest Tour de France champion since 1904, the second youngest in history and the first Slovenian champion.

Pogacar, who turns 22 on Monday, overcame a 57-second deficit to Roglic and won Saturday’s penultimate stage, a 22-mile time trial with a final climb of four miles. He is 59 seconds ahead of Roglic after three weeks and 84 hours of racing in total.

“In fact my dream was just to be [in] the Tour de France, ”said Pogacar. “I can’t believe it, and if you ask me in a week, a month, I still probably won’t believe it.”

Pogacar won the stage by 81 seconds, more than the margin separating second place from eighth place after 55 minutes on the roads. Roglic was fifth.

It reminds the American Greg LeMond surpass French Laurent Fignon in the 1989 Tour time trial final.

This final margin was the closest in Tour history – eight seconds. It would be the 11th time in Tour history that the difference has been less than a minute.

“Obviously, I haven’t pushed enough,” Roglic said. “I was more and more without the power that I obviously needed. I really gave it my all until the end.

Australia Richie Porte will join Pogacar and Roglic on the podium after moving from fourth place in the time trial. Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez placeholder image, who came in third, fell to sixth.

It is the first time since 2007 that everyone on the final podium of the Tour de France will be there for the first time.

Sunday’s final is the traditional ceremonial walk in Paris where the leaders of the general do not attack each other.

Pogacar is competing in his first Tour de France and his second season as a professional cyclist with a World Tour team.

Last September, he finished third in the Vuelta a Espana, one of three Grand Tours won by Roglic. At the time, Pogacar became the youngest Grand Tour podium since 1974.

“I knew I could be with the best, that I could follow” after the Vuelta, said Pogacar, “but I never thought that I would win already this year, especially in this season which was really strange. ”

UAE Team Emirates initially planned to use Pogacar to support Fabio Aru, but the continued emergence of the Slovenian changed the plan.

” I go [to the Tour] first to learn, ”Pogacar said in May. “But if I have a chance to show what I can do, I will. ”

Pogacar was Roglic’s Robin from Batman for most of this tour.

Roglic has worn the yellow jersey as the race leader for the past two weeks. at the head of the dominant team Jumbo-Visma. Pogacar donned the white jersey for the best-placed rider 25 and under in a weaker team.

But when they clashed in the climbs, Pogacar usually stayed with Roglic, sometimes leaving with him.

In Saturday’s final climb, without team support, Pogacar showed who the strongest Slovenian is.

« [Roglic] was really superior throughout the Tour, ”said Pogacar. “It must be devastated, but it’s bike racing I guess. Today I beat him, and that was it.
